Conservatory association.

Guild of master craftsman.

E.B.C - European builders confederation.

Energy saving

Approximately 60% of domestic heat loss is caused by draughts and through single glazed windows. So replacement double glazing of single glazed doors and windows can help you save money on your heating bills.

If you cannot afford double glazing for all of your windows and doors, choose the ones in the rooms you use the most, or the rooms most difficult to keep warm.

Glass types

There is a variety of different glass that can be used for double glazing, all with slightly different characteristics;

Low-emissivity glass (also known as Low-E glass) lets light and heat in, but stops the heat from passing out through the window. This provides higher levels of energy efficiency than other types of glass.

Reflective glass, tinted glass and spectrally selective glass reduce the amount of heat and ultraviolet light that can get in, these are more commonly used in warmer climates.

Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded with a plastic or resin layer. It absorbs ultraviolet light and reduces noise. If it's hit, the glass is held together by the resin layer.

Toughened safety glass is much stronger than standard glass. It?s designed to withstand direct impacts or shatter into chunks if broken.

Frame materials

UPVC frames, un-plasticised Polyvinyl Chloride, are commonly used for double glazing windows as it is low maintenance, easy to clean and thermally efficient.

Typically these frames have been white, but a wide range of colours and styles are available, such as wood grain effects.

If you live in a conservation area, restrictions on the type of double glazing and windows you can have fitted will apply, check with your local authority, they will be able to advise you as to what materials or styles are applicable in your area.

Double-glazing is suitable for many different types of window. The windows are normally made to standard sizes and sealed in the factory. Then the entire sealed unit is installed.

The types of window available include casement, sash, tilt and turn and many more.
